FACTS & THEORIES

We will draw the identical circle three more times:

By adding three more (obvious) circles, the formation is basically there:

All we have to do next, is leave out the right lines and colour the right planes (i.e. flatten them in the field) and there comes the formation:

Notice that the basic pattern and the before mentioned circle (at the bottom of the previous page) are no longer visible:

Bert's discoveries were threefold: First of all he dicovered the hidden basic pattern: the heart of all the formations he reconstructed.

Secondly, he discovered that each part of the analysed formations was very carefully defined following strict, geometrical laws, both in size and in position. In other words: each and every part of the formation was very specific in size and had been positioned into the field was great care, thus granting the formation its perfect geometry. If one part (for instance a ring) had been placed a few centimetres to the left or to the right, the formation would have lost its geometrical perfection. It would have lost its enchanting effect on people...

Bert's third discovery was a remarkable one and in my opinion a the utmost importance. He found that many lines he needed to draw on paper in order to come to the end formation, were actually there in the field! He called these lines 'construction lines'.

Construction lines can be found in a formation if you lift the flattened crop. At certain places, you will find small strips of crop (some of which only contain a few plants) that run in a different direction than the rest of the flattened crop. You will see that the construction lines have gone down first, after which the rest of the formation was flattened. It is as if the Circle Makers first put down this 'framework' before flattening the eventual formation.

The construction lines can be seen very clearly from the air:

Why was the discovery of the construction lines so important? I will tell you on the following page...
