THE SUMMER OF 2009

------------------------------------

Once again, 2009 lived up to the crop circle expectations: it exceeded all previous years. Ever since the so-called 'crop circle wave' began in 1978, the Circle Makers seem to be working towards a climax that many researchers believe will take place in 2012. In 2009, in Southern England alone, 73 formations were discovered: better and bigger than ever before. Worldwide, 120 formations were reported, distributed over 15 countries.

As always, nobody could foretell what the crop circles would be like this summer. We try to each year, but so far we have all failed miserably. Each time we think we have discovered a pattern, the mysterious Circle Makers change their strategy. In this sense, 2009 was no different. It was an intense year, in which astronomy, the animal kingdom, and 2012 played important parts.

The crop circle season started remarkably early in the season: in the early morning of April 14, the first formation was discovered in a canola (oil seed rape) field near Avebury, the largest stone circle in the wold:

Then, on April 29, a magnificent and quite complex formation appeared next to Silbury Hill, the prehistoric 7-steps pyramid at Avebury:

This trend was continued in 2009: the formations were many, big, complex, and mysterious…

After no less than 6 formations in April (a record!), the month of May followed with 9 magnificent formations, first in the yellow canola fields and later in gorgeous green barley. My frustration knew no boundaries for being 'stuck' in the Netherlands, finishing my latest book "Crop Circles - The Evidence". It had to be finished before I could leave for Wiltshire. And so, like everybody else and with pain in my heart, I checked www.CropCirclesAndMore.com and www.CropCircleConnector.com on a daily basis to see all the beauties that had appeared and that I would not be able to visit...

On April 29, this gorgeous pattern appeared next to the White Horse at Roundway, Devizes:

The canola formation of May 3 at East Kennett showed remarkable details on the ground:

The whopper of May appeared on the 29th at Wayland Smithy, a large long barrow just over the border Wiltshire – Oxfordshire:

An enormous jellyfish stared at the photographer in his helicopter. Even though the animal kingdom has always played an important role in the crop circles (think for instance of the many dolphins we've had), this particular style was unprecedented. The striking tentacles and the row of circles growing in size would return in later formations, as we will see on the following pages. Was this formation telling us something about the abominable state of our oceans? Was it referring to the washing ashore of thousands of yellyfishes on the beaches of England, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands? Or did it symbolise our earth magnetic field as influenced by solar wind? (See the work of scientist Red Collie on www.CropCircleConnector.com) Many formations have communicated the influence of sun spot activity on our planet. At this moment in time, our sun displays quite anomalous behaviour, as confirmed by NASA.

June received 24 formations: an absolute record. The designs varied from a simple circle to a complex sevenfold geometric pattern in which 7 dolphins seemed to be jumping over each other. Absolute winners this month were the Dragonfly and the Phoenix that appeared in one and the same field. On June 3 the Dragonfly was discovered:

A wonderful design that even showed the tiny veins in its wings! The lay of the barley was beautiful, as indeed was the lay of the same crop in the Phoenix formation that appeared on June 12. The Circle Makers had been kind to us photographers: the field containing both formations was right next to the microlight airstrip from which we fly. It was literally a matter of taking off, snapping the picture, and landing...

A remarkable synchronicity was the appearance of a fish formation in a field at Bishops Cannings, on the exact day a major international symposium about the sad state of our oceans took place in Rotterdam (June 8: World Ocean Day):

Finally it became July: my book was printed and that same day I arrived in Wiltshire. Luckily the Circle Makers kept on going with the same intensity: no less than 22 sublime formations appeared this month! On July 1, a relatively small formation was found at the brim of a hill at Avebury. The location of this formation was no coincidence: it was the only formation that survived an angry farmer; he cut out all formations (5 in total!) he discovered in his fields. However, this small one could not be seen from the road, only from the air, and thus it survived...

Interesting detail was the fact that this formation was a partial repetition of a larger formation that appeared on the other side of the road (Avebury Stone Avenue). This one was destroyed by the farmer. It appeared in three stages and looked like this:
