Torn off plants

number of pages: 2

In some crop formations, the seeds heads have been 'torn off' their stems. These seed heads can sometimes be found lying on the ground, but sometimes they seem to have vanished.

In other cases the stems have been 'cut off' under an angle, at different heights. This phenomenon can quite often be seen in the formation itself, but sometimes also outside the formation, at the edge of the field. This was for instance the case in Hoeven, the Netherlands, in 2002 (see photo below).

Each time I find these cut off stems, I feel surprised. What kind of energy cuts/tears off stems at different heights? If this were done by some force (either mechanical or energetic) that rushes through a crop field, wouldn't you expect all stems that grow close together in a small bundle to be hit and cut at the same height?

Photo below: the upper part of the seed head had been torn off, but it still stuck in the rest of the seed head. However, there was no real contact anymore between the two halfs, that's why the upper parts was totally dehydrated. (Hoeven, the Netherlands 2002).
